Obtaining Airspace Authorization through AirMap

AirMap is one of several LAANC enabled providers that will allow a drone operator to obtain **real-time authorization to fly at pre-designated altitudes in controlled airspace.  LAANC stands for Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability and is a collaboration between the FAA and drone industry.  Airspace authorization must be obtained to fly legally in any controlled airspace.

The integration between the Kespry App and AirMap allows your planned mission area to be reviewed in real-time and alert you if airspace authorization is needed by displaying a warning in the upper right-hand corner of your screen.  If authorization is required, you can apply for authorization using the AirMap application on the iPad.  Items you should note for your application are as follows:

  • Flight Speed: Varies, but 15mph is sufficient

  • Weight: Phantom 4 RTK - 3 lbs. /  Mavic 2 Pro 2 lbs.

  • Visibility: US Part 107 requires a minimum of 3SM

  • Preflight Check: Have you physically inspected the drone for intact propellers and no damage to the body of the drone?

  • VLOS: Maintaining visual line of sight of the drone during a mission is mandatory for all flights.

  • Anti-Collision Lighting: DJI Drones do not have anti-collision lights and may not be operated more than 30min before sunrise or more than 30min after sunset.

  • Drone Registered: Firmatek registers all leased drones. Customers who purchased their own drone must register the drone with the FAA.

  • US Part 107 Certification: Part 107 is required by the FAA for commercial drone flights.

**Real-time authorization will be granted if the altitude you are requesting is at or below the published altitude in the airport grid for the exact location you will be flying your mission.  If you require a higher altitude, the application will go to a manual review and can take a matter of hours, days, or weeks.  It is always a best practice to apply a minimum of 24-48 hours prior to flight.
